Home Adopt Me Italian Greyhounds Pet Food Myths Recipe Biz Opportunity No Puppy Mills Online Store

Our love affair with this delightful breed started about 10 years ago. We are lucky to live with three "Iggies", as they are affectionately called. They are NOT for everyone. On this page we will try to highlight their qualities and quirks. Read our article on the Pet Food Recipe  page about feeding your IG.

If you are thinking about getting an IG, please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns. It's important to know all the facts before committing to ANY  breed, but particularly, these lively little sprites!

DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE, BUY A DOG FROM A PET STORE!!!
See our No Puppy Mills page for the sad reality of pet store dogs and the horrible places where they are raised, exploited and bred over and over again for nothing other than human greed and profit . They live in soiled cages with no human contact or care.

Italian Greyhounds

Italian Greyhounds like other Italian Greyhounds. They do extremely well in pairs, as anyone who owns a few will tell you.
They make excellent companions on their own, but we will always have at least two. We most recently adopted our senior foster IG named Speedo. He came to us from NM throught the Italian Greyhound Rescue Foundation in desperate need of medical attention. After nursing him back to health, we could not part with him. Speedo is 13 and will spend his golden years being a cherished part of our family.

Visit Silver Hounds to see the good work Speedo has inspired! www.silverhounds.org

More about the breed...

While many people think they are the "perfect" dog, there are many people who relinquish them due to the fact that they can be difficult to housetrain.(especially the males) They can also be clingy and get very attached to their person. If you don't want a dog in your face, under the covers and on your lap, DON'T get an IG. Their job is to be near you at all times. They do not require much grooming, but do need their teeth brushed regularly and their nails trimmed weekly. They shed very little and the short hair is almost undetectable on clothing and furniture. They have no "doggy odor" and make wonderful apartment dogs and can be trained to use a litterbox. They normally don't bark much, unless you have a few. They are peaceful, sometimes nervous little dogs.
Because they don't have a lot of fur, they especially don't like to be cold or wet, and they do need protection from the elements. If you don't want a dog who needs more clothing than you do, (and you live in a cold climate) DON'T get an IG! Here in sunny AZ, our IG's also need to wear sun protection. They will lie in the sun, basking in it's warmth for hours if you let them. Their favorite spot is in a sunny window or under a blanket. They love to burrow under things and many of them love to completely remove all the stuffing from their toys, just to get to the squeaker. As puppies, they are fearless and must be constantly supervised. They are not the type of dog that can be left for hours on end or crated for most of the day. They also are not "outside" dogs. They are COMPANIONS first and foremost. If you work long hours please, don't get an IG. They thrive on regular attention and if left alone, can be destructive due to boredom. They want to be WITH you at all times. My dogs are happiest when left for no longer than 4-5 hours at a time.

They do best with older, quiet children and don't like loud voices or to be scolded. They are not as physically fragile as they appear, but seem happiest in a calm environment.

Holistic Hounds

Having such a unique breed made us research healthy food alternatives from the start. IG's have some specific nutritional needs to keep their teeth gleaming and their coats shiny. After seeing the benefits of feeding naturally, we began our crusade to share with every pet owner what we have learned about proper nutrition.
Visit Holistic-Hounds.com today to find out more about healthy pet foods. Please know what your pets are eating.

Silver Hounds....the senior project

Our new fundraising group, Silver Hounds, is dedicated to helping with medical bills for senior Italian Greyhounds in private foster care across the country.
Please visit us today and see all the fun items we offer to benefit the dogs! www.silverhounds.org

Don't shop....ADOPT! Don't pay for fancy "designer" breeds, which are really only MUTTS! Check your local animal shelter or rescue group for your next family member. Don't buy, when so many die.....

Playdates

If you have an IG and live in the Flagstaff area, call us! We would love to meet you and your Iggy!
We also have several IG playdates throughout the year where we all get together and have a blast watching the dogs interact.
